How are band classes graded? Band classes are graded based on attendance and engagement for class and rehearsals.
Is there a GPA requirement? Fletcher Band students must maintain a 2.0 GPA.
What are the behavioral expectations? Students are expected to follow all of the behavioral expectations outlined in the Fletcher Band Handbook. In general, be on time, show up to learn, be willing to put in the work, be respectful of teachers, instructors, officers, and other band students.
What are the attendance requirements? All rehearsals are mandatory unless it's communicated otherwise. We understand that conflicts happen and communication is key! It's expected that, unless there is an emergency or sickness, planned absences should be communicated 2 weeks in advance.
How does percussion placement work? Percussion placement camps will happen on May 30 and June 5. Students will have the opportunity to learn warm ups and try each instrument. The percussion staff will work with students to place them on a particular part for the Marching Season show. Percussion students learn all of the different instruments in class and will have the opportunity to play all of them as the year progresses.
How does instrument rental work? The band rents out a number of instruments to students. The student and parent sign a rental agreement and there is a $50/semester rental fee to cover cleaning and any repairs. Percussion and colorguard students have an equipment fee of $50/semester to cover maintaining, replacing, and repairing that equipment.
What leadership opportunities are there for students? This is a largely student-run organization so there are so many leadership opportunities! Students can try out for an officer position in the spring of their freshman year.
What are the applicable honor societies? Fletcher has a chapter of the Tri-M Honor Society for musicians and the Pagaentry of the Arts honor society for colorguard.
What types of scholarship opportunities are there for band and colorguard? If your student chooses to go on to college, there are many scholarship opportunities available if they continue to participate in music and colorguard programs. We partner closely with UNF and FSCJ here in Jacksonville.
Can I also play sports? Yes! We have had many band athletes over the years in every sport you can imagine - swimming, football, lacrosse, soccer, cheerleading - you name it and there has been a band student who has done both! Mr. Salinas works closely with the coaches to coordinate rehearsal and practice. As always, communication is key!
